The town looks abandoned and people left are the tribal and impoverished population.

The lake is toxic with very high levels of Cyanobacteria - so much the water is full of green algae everywhere (no swimming or fishing, of course, if you care about your health) and it really does stink like rotten egg. The pictures and views of the lake are mesmerizing, but the town of Clearlake, Lucerne, and Nice surrounding the lake is a dump. Drive thru to see the views but keep going!ĭon’t go. It would take years and a lot of $$ to bring the area back to what it might have been once. I wish we would have read reviews before making the drive, but the drive was beautiful and if you only look at the vineyards, lake and mountains it looks like it would be a beautiful vacation spot. There are a few trails to walk but there is literally nothing else to do there. It was nice and had a small beach area but with the algae in the water you can’t go in. We went to Clear Lake State Park to check out the campground. We couldn’t even find anywhere to stop and grab a bite to eat. It was strange as it is such a big lake! Most of the docks orotund the lake were abandoned or in disrepair. We were so disappointed! We saw none of that! The areas surrounding the lake were all run down and we only saw a couple boats out on the water. We were looking forward to seeing a beautiful lake and small towns, shops, restaurants, etc. It is gorgeous.ĭay trip drive to Clear Lake to check out the State Park and area in general.

If you decide to visit the lake, do it for the birds, sights, wineries, etc, just don't go in the water. There was no stench in the air in June either.

Now we know the whole story but it really is a shame because visually, the lake is gorgeous.īottom line - don't go IN the water ( remember, there was NO algae while we were there in June visible but obviously it affected our skin anyway). It really is a magnificent lake and for days we could not understand why the cities are aging and becoming run down. Yes, I still have them after about 3 weeks. I even read that an entire species of fish died due to fish herpes! Sadly, I found the part about herpes after both my husband and I got the deep red, itchy bumps now blistering. Researching this more, I learned that it actual causes death to animals including the fish in the lake, and can make people very sick.

This creates an environment in the lake that causes algae to bloom and release dangerous and smelly toxins. The issue is this is a natural lake, shallow on average, making it especially warm in the summer.

I did see a bright green oily residue on the edge of the water near the house we were looking at but the realtor mentioned nothing of this problem and discounted the oil residue. There was not a single person we talked to who did not tell us about the problem, and it was becoming clear to us that this required further research, even though while we were there it was only a little bit visible to us in Lower Lake. Fun!!! We were ready to take the plunge on purchasing our summer home and then came across the algae stench stories. Considering a 2nd home purchase, we visited this lake a few weeks ago and spent 1 fabulous day swimming in the middle of this magnificent looking, huge lake! My family enjoyed the warmish water and skied all day long.
